The Sweetest Thing's Sunday…..

Easter Sunday was extra special to me this year.  It started out with the fact that all of my children were with us..I know that's every mother's dream and it doesn't always happen but this year it did…I'm just thankful for that and not asking for more! Easter was a glorious day for me in more ways than one!

Easter was a glorious day because we serve a Risen Savior!
The whole weekend was simply spectacular! Weather wise…family wise…etc..
Thank You , Lord!

I do not take those moments lightly at all anymore! I used to! I really did…and I really won't anymore! I'm forever grateful for each precious moment we are allowed to spend together! Each time sweet Holly and Brad make the effort to come home…each time Miller and Sarah "want" to spend time with us! Each time that Mitch, Britney and Layton come over or call us to go out…just the little things…I'm forever grateful! Sometimes when I look at Layton in particular..I'm so overwhelmed by God's blessings I can't even put it into words…I hope that doesn't offend my own children but you truly can't imagine it or experience it until you are the "Nonnie"! Lately, Layton and I have had several conversations about me being tired, etc and she hears me say,  "I don't even know my own name anymore"! She is quick to remind me that "My name is Nonnie"! And you know…it IS!!! And I love it! I told her the other day when I was young I wanted to change my name and she said…" But I call you Nonnie…that's your name!" Of course I melted right into her sweet smile and her childlike perception! I hope I can live up to that name! I chose it because of all of the other Nonnies before me! That's a lot to live up to when you know the "Nonnies" I am blessed to know!

Which leads me into the real meaning of this post!! The Sweetest Thing I've Ever Known Is My Own Mother!!!! That should be the title of this post!!! I've always known everything she shared with us this Easter…but somehow..hearing it again.. verbalized in the sweetest way….it just meant more and more to me and I'm sure it will to you as well!!!

You see…my mother has been wanting to tell all of us her "story"while we were together as a group for awhile now! We all have a story but some of us have lived a lot more of the story than others…and she is certainly one of them. Some of us have stories or pieces to the puzzle that make up our lives that we can't understand  until we are parents. We basically all want the same things for our children. Some of us were protected by God's mercy and God's lovingkindness for all kinds of reasons and don't have as much of a story to share…. but it is important none the less! My mother is one of those special people that was protected by God's grace while experiencing things in life that a little girl really shouldn't have to experience in the eyes of this world…especially in the eyes of ME!  and yet I get to enjoy the blessings of the life lessons that she lived…the experiences that led her to want to make us a family that always stuck together no matter what and love each other unconditionally! The very fact that  I get to be her daughter and my children get to be her grandchildren makes me just smile and feel extremely blessed.  And now I even have a granddaughter that gets to enjoy a great grandmother with a very special "story'!~ You see…her story is her personal testimony as to why she believes in our Risen Savior!

If I try to tell it for her it won't do it justice! I watched my mother tell us her testimony with trembling lips…just for a second mind you…but she told us with full confidence that she was saved by a Lord that had been taking care of her since early childhood! Although she lived through a life that not many of us would really want to take on…she knew all the while that God was preparing her for a journey that she wanted and would want to live out to the full extent. While still in early elementary school her mother became quite ill with a mental illness that to me is still baffling…and I'm told isn't hereditary! After researching it I'm not sure I believe that... but that's ok! I know that a lot of her illness came from tremendous hurt, resentment, bitterness and anger that was never dealt with. However…to a child at the age of 8….that's a lot to take on! For 6 months my sweet grandmother was sent away to a mental hospital….I will spare the other details…but that was definitely a lot to take on for my mother as a young girl…growing up with an infant brother and an angry father…. and other visits to the hospital that happened throughout her growing up years.

All I can think about is Mercy Me's new song "When The Hurt And The Healer Collide!"  What a great tittle!! Keep my eyes completely fixed on You!!! That's my favorite refrain! Wow!! I could listen to this song all day long!! I love it!! And I'm truly blessed every time that I listen to it!

My mother could be really angry about her life…about not having the childhood she really wanted to have but instead she "made" a life for her children that she knew would be a benefit to us and she cared enough to do it even through tremendous hardships. Finally, once we had moved to Birmingham in the mid 1970's  God brought her to a point in her life after preparing her and protecting her all of those years…and she was ready to accept Christ as her Savior and Lord when we had only been in Birmingham for maybe a year? I for one am extremely thankful and forever grateful for the mercies God has bestowed on my family. What God spared my mother from…He also spared us from ..I know the consequences of her life could have so easily been played out in all of our lives. He loved her enough to put that small, still voice in her heart and bring her to a saving knowledge of Him….What a blessing to me…my sister…my brother…and all of our families!
Easter was definitely a Sweet Sunday for our family after hearing my mother tell us her "story"!
Thank you, Lord. Your mercies are new every morning!

And here is a Sweet Sundae treat….my new obsession! Gourmet Popsicles!!! Can't wait to try both of these!

How to Make the King of Pops' Banana Puddin' Ice Pops

In the last post of this series, we continue to share the best of the artisanal ice pops trend with you by featuring stories and recipes from some of our favorite vendors nationwide. See previous ice pop coverage here.

"My brother's a sucker for these farmers," says Steven Carse. "He'll pick up odd ingredients from the farmers' markets because they talk him into it." That is how Steven explains the experimentation that goes on in the King of Pops kitchen, which is rented by the hour in Atlanta, Georgia. One day, Steven hopes to have a brick-and-mortar pops shop (and kitchen), but for now he pedals his cart daily around Woodruff Park and the corner of North Avenue and North Highland. (That's on the corner of the Buddy's Gas station, right across from Manual's Tavern, for those who live in Atlanta).

Why pops? A year ago, Steven was laid off from AIG. The extra time to daydream--plus visits to his oldest brother doing PhD work in Mexico spent nibbling paletas--lead to his self-imposed coronation.

Although Steven posts his ever-changing menus on Twitter and Facebook, some pops lovers who aren't hip to social media fail to check before driving to the "the corner." "Some people like the idea of our changing up flavors, some, well... I don't know if I would use the word angry, but they're not happy when they get there," Steven says. So he tries to keep fan favorites--Chocolate Sea Salt, Blackberry Mojito, and Banana Puddin'--in the rotation. (Steven's favorite flavors are Pear Cardamom--"I always get stuck on the newest one being my favorite"--and Blueberry Lemongrass.) We tried to get the Chocolate Sea Salt recipe, but there's a special ingredient that, after putting their heads together, the brothers Carse decided they couldn't bear to reveal. No matter. After the jump, find the recipe for the pop that Steven says represents his upbringing, the Banana Puddin' Pop.

1 vanilla bean, seeds removed (keep seeds and pod)

Memory Lane Up in the Headlights...it's got me reminiscing...

Sometimes...I just want to tune out the world and listen to my country songs!!! You must admit...they take you away...maybe not like Calgon... and I don't have mud tires like Jason...but they take you away...to "Memory Lane" or any "Dirt Road" you may be remembering that seemed to not have a care in the world!!

If only....

Real life isn't quite like that....and...since I don't want to be a "Debby Downer" I'm not going to re-hash it any more than is necessary!!! I learned along time ago that I could either drown in my own sorrows...or get up and go!! And I really did decide to get up and go!!!!
Which brings me to why I'm posting these Bible verses that are full of promises!!! Promises that are real...not just a quick fix like riding down Memory Lane with Jason Aldean...although I will admit...I love his singing...and he is real close to taking precedent over my all time fave....Kenny Chesney! But hey...I can't do that!!! Kenny holds too many fond memories for me and Jim!!!! And that my friends...is definitely worth a trip down "memory lane"!

But...back to this post...sometimes life just isn't what we expect...and I'm ok with that...most of the time!
I NEED to be ok with that ALL of the time!! When I think back on all of the trials that Jim and I have been through together...and you'd be surprised at how they add up!!... Quickly... I might add....God has NEVER left us or forsaken us! His word has ALWAYS proven to be true and I will continue to hold fast to these promises!!!

Songs will come and go...I will play them over and over while I'm getting ready in the mornings or getting ready for bed...I will dream of being a Country Superstar...but that will most definitely fade!!!! In fact...it never was!!! Bet you didn't even know that was my dream!!!
But God's promises and His word will forever remain the same....there is no change....it is what it is and that is a wonderful promise for me to cling to when I'm not sure where life is taking me!!! If it's a dirt road...great....if it's a rocky road....I need His promises more than ever...if it's an easy road...I will praise Him for it....and....If we are talking about the "Causeway Bridge Road....." that leads into New Orleans... then you've REALLY got my attention and I can finally get to my reason for looking up all of these wonderful verses!!!! You see....in case you didn't know...I've got grown kids as well as a senior in high school that I now "fret" over...which I shouldn't do...I know all of that...but I do...and you would too if you were their mom! ha ha!!  I'm so very thankful that I have a God that even cares about my fretfulness and my children's needs of encouragement in their marriages, as young parents and young businessmen....as husbands, wives, mothers, friends... not to mention an AP Calculus student and just keeping up with friends and whats going on....Basketball practice, etc...Life is really hard sometimes...I remember!!! So I will always cling to these verses as my lifeline...as my very present help in times of trouble....I certainly can't depend on myself or anyone else...it's just not possible!!
Hey... ( as Layton says before anything she tells you!!) Hey...Nonnie....maybe the Causeway Bridge has a cause...maybe the road that leads to Tamworth Drive has a cause...maybe....just maybe...the road that takes Miller to Auburn will have a cause!!! What if we don't know the "cause" until we get to Heaven??? What if I have to answer people's questions about God's promises with "just cause!" like my kids used to do to me!!! That's Ok....Cause.....God promises us that His word will remain true.....and when I sometimes ask Him why He loves me....even ME....He whispers.... ( Hey, Nonnie ) just cause......and Layton and I both smile.....

2nd Timothy 2:13
If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;  in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

The "First" of Many "Lasts"

Jim class of 1981; Carolyn class of 1982
ok....so I ventured into the hallways of not only mine and Jim's  alma matter....but also the alma matter of my oldest children and the soon to be alma matter of my youngest child for our Last "Back to School Night".....
Needless to say, there were many emotions at play! At first I thought I would just be glad to be done with my upteenth "Back to School Night"....but as usual, I got there and loved seeing friends old and new...loved getting to see Miller's teachers and love, love, love getting to see who all is my child's class!!!

Holly and Brad class of 2005

Mitch and Britney class of 2002

Chad, Roy and Miller class of 2012

 How shallow!!! But...fun!!!
You have to admit you do want to know who your child sits by in English or Math... or who he has Sr. Lounge with!!! You know what I mean....it's a glimpse into their life that you don't get unless you GOOOO to "Back to School Night"!! You get to see their teachers in their own element...and to me, that is fun! It is special! I'm always overwhelmed at the love they have not only for Briarwood as a school, but for the students and for the subjects that they teach! Tonight I learned that Mr. Carter also meets with Samford students on the side! Students that have no ties to Briarwood but basically need a "biblical world view!" That's exciting stuff...I don't care who you are!! The fact that I actually heard him say that he realized that our students are getting to their University of Choice and not knowing how to handle what a professor throws out there because they've only been in a Christian School environment! Hey...I like that!!! I wish I had had that at their age!!! Our kids need to know how to handle other views that will be thrown upon them on a daily basis next year...and the next!!! They need to know why they believe WHAT they believe!!! I was also struck by how much Mr. Carter had grown up!!! LOL!!! I think Mitch had him his first year of teaching...or close to it!! I was so glad he didn't remember me or the fact that I cried alot back in those days!!!

I was also so very glad to see Coach Matthews and get to tell him what a positive impact the Senior Retreat had on our students!!! No matter if they snuck out or not!! ( I know NOTHING!!) But our kids truly love him and he is going to be such a great leader along with all of the faculty at Briarwood!!!
As we entered the AP Calculus room....I sat on the back row!!!! I barely passed Consumer Math my Senior year at Briarwood so I was a bit overwhelmed!!!! Until sweet Mrs. Martin began talking...then I remembered all of the years of knowing her and saw for myself that maybe even I could've been taught Math under her!!! Ok...that might be a stretch but I know for a fact that Miller will do great with Mrs. Martin! I'm so thankful that he is in her class this year!

"Friends" Class of 2012
As we were leaving...and I was truly turned around in the building because so many things have changed in that school over the years....I was still struck by the overwhelming fact that God has blessed Briarwood Christian School tremendously! And that will never change as long as we are faithful to pray for and support the school and it's administration. I know we all have our gripes at times...and sometimes I think I'm "entitled" to them in a way since I have truly lived them. However, had it not been for the loving, nurturing environment of Briarwood....there is truthfully no telling where I would be today...So....although this was my "Last" Back to School Night....It's definitely not the end....it's just the beginning...the first of many to come with our grandchildren and hopefully great grandchildren! In fact...our oldest son Mitch went to their daughter's First Back to School Night with his good friend Cameron Hogan!!!! If you had told me this would be happening back in Mitch and Cameron's Senior year of high school....I probably would've laughed till I cried!!! But it DID happen!!! and it's BECAUSE of God's faithfulness!!! Nothing else!!! God's faithfulness to His people....God's faithfulness to a school that seeks to honor and serve Him above all else.

Layton with Poppy....past and future generations!

Layton, Class of 2025!!!
Who knows??? Maybe I will go sit in on some of Layton's future Back to School Nights!! Or, if God sees fit to bless in this manner...to help sweet Holly have another Back to School Night of her own!! My only regret is that I didn't help her with her first one!!! She was a very good teacher!!! A chip off the old block from all of the teaching she received from such a wonderful school!!!
