The Dichotomy of my heart...and then some!!

A dichotomy is any splitting of a whole into exactly two non-overlapping (and not necessarily equal) parts, meaning it is a procedure in which a whole is divided into two parts. It is a partition of a whole (or a set) into two parts (subsets) that are:
The two parts thus formed are complements. In logic, the partitions are opposites if there exists a proposition such that it holds over one and not the other.
In the community of philosophers and scholars, many believe that "unless a distinction can be made rigorous and precise it isn't really a distinction."

Dichotomy is also a method of execution wherein the victim is cut in two.

Hmmmm......not sure I like that last definition!!! But I can honestly tell you that truthfully...sometimes I feel like that is exactly what is happening to me these days! As much as I'm trying to learn from these "life takeaways" sometimes......
I feel like the victim...and I most definitely am not!!!
it's just my human nature to feel sorry for myself and wallow in it!!!! and I'm very tired of it!!!
Most of you have certainly figured out what a struggle it has been for our family to have Holly and Brad move off due to circumstances beyond their control....We've been through a HUGE range of emotions and honestly...we've dealt with them to the best of our ability and then we just turned them over to our Heavenly Father, trusting that He would see us through all of this and bring glory to Himself through every single detail. So...moving right along...they've been gone for 2 months now and we are all settled into a routine and that is good....very good!!! God is using this time to strengthen their relationship as a couple as  well as their relationship with God and I just shared with Holly that if nothing else...this has truly made me desire to spend more time in God's word....be more consistent with a daily quiet time...and anxiously await His blessings that are beyond my feeble brain's comprehension! She said that she and Brad have also been experiencing the same things and that truly did bring joy to my heart!

Which brings me to the "dichotomy" I'm experiencing!!

                                        proverbs 3:5-6
trust in the Lord will all of your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight!

You see....we moved them to Louisiana under VERY stressful and non desirable circumstances....that I will NOT elaborate on! and I haven't been back since...simply due to my responsibilities to my youngest child who is still at home...my shop, and the fact that Holly has been back home several times! :)
So...for our 28th Anniversary we chose to go to New Orleans and spend time with them and stay with them in their lovely apartment that Chick Fil A provides for them...and when I say lovely...this one is truly the best one yet! So there is one positive thing I can say!!!  But....as our plane began the descent into Kenner, La...which is actually the area they live in and where the airport is located....I looked out the plane window and all I could see was that long bridge...the Causeway Bridge and all of those emotions of anger and sadness and everything else that I went through several weeks ago when we moved them began flooding back into my brain and I just sat there sort of dumbfounded that these emotions could so easily be stirred up again! Even as I sit here typing I am wiping tears away for 2 reasons! 1- those emotions that re-surfaced are so very real and obviously still at work in my heart and 2- I'm embarased and horrified and how easily they began flooding back into my heart!! The dichotomy is the fact that yes....the Lord has worked mightily in all of our lives...BUT...I do feel as if I'm two different people and that at times my heart is in two pieces and those pieces are working hard against the other one! It's a constant battle...one that I start every day off with and pray every day that I will be joyful in the midst of circumstances beyond my control! I know we all go through times like this...I really do! But...I've never experienced anything like this in my life...EVER!!! I remember everyone in the plane looking at that dad blasted bridge and me just thinking...for the love...that was the most miserable, long, hot drive of my life!!!! And yet I also thought...my daughter lives here now...she actually lives here now and I've got to accept it and move on!!!
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
I did my very best to not bring up anything that remotely let them know just how much we wanted this part to be over with...to know where they will be next...to understand all of the "why's", etc....and I did a pretty good job if I do say so myself!! The only time I was worried was when Holly and Brad brought up something about our last time there and how he had had to "hold Holly up" as they left our hotel because SHE was crying and saying that it was really hard to always have to be strong for me!! WOW!!! That'll get your attention!! I've always told her how very proud of her I am and how she has stepped into this role that God has entrusted to  her  and how she is an incredible wife to Brad! He tells me all the time that I would never believe just how strong my daughter truly is...and yet I do believe it! I see it! and I DON'T hear it...which is a GREAT thing! I don't " hear " her complain! I don't know about the times she cries and wants to come home...I don't know about the times they are eating pb and j sandwiches to save money....I don't know about the hours she puts in at the store to help him because some employee decided not to show up that day! What I do hear from her are the positives...and she knows that if she were to complain to me it would only make matters worse just in the fact that I am already sad. So...to remedy that...I need to dive in head first in the promises of God! To truly believe His word and take Him at His word! I always say I do that...and then my heart breaks...even if it's a tiny break! It doesn't have to be split in two...it is simply the things a mother's heart frets over that sometimes make it so hard! That.. and the oh so obvious fact that I miss my baby girl, I want her home....I want her to teach at Briarwood again... I want her to get to see Layton in K-4 since that is where Holly taught...I want her to see Miller in his senior year of high school...I want what I want when I want it, basically!!! And yet...I truly feel a peace that only God can bring to this mother's heart that frets so....THAT is the dichotomy!!! That is the real issue here!!! I want what God wants for Holly and Brad! I want what God wants for Mitch and Britney, for Miller...for me and Jim!!! I want it first and foremost! So even when my heart falters...and I look at long, hot bridges that we have to cross to get to the other side....when I take my eyes off of the goal that is really set before us....I wish you would just shake me and say, "Carolyn!!!! Get over yourself!!! You want God's best for your child...for ALL of your children!!!" I really do wish you would do that!
Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

As much fun as we had with them all weekend...I truly did know that I was looking forward to coming home! To getting back to my daily routine...to taking care of Miller and seeing Mitch, Britney and Layton! To being at Mulberry Heights and getting ready for our Sip and See this Thursday...to simply living life to it's fullest and making sure that all that we do is right in step with what God has intended for our family. I'm looking forward to Holly's next visit...to our time we will spend together over Labor Day at the beach....life definitely goes on and the sadness and the loneliness gets easier...that's what it's really been about I think! I'm actually afraid that I will get used to this and I don't want to!!! Gosh...I hope I'm not the only one that is this stubborn...or selfish, or crazy, or whatever you want to call it!!! But it's the truth! I don't want to accept the fact that I accept it!!! I AM THE DICHOTOMY!!!  wow!!
there..I said it!!! I'm glad I have loving, accepting friends and family, a wonderful husband that loves me no matter how crazy I am!!! and especially a Heavenly Father that already knows exactly what I'm going through and has Never, Ever, Ever let me down! He is always right there....right where He said He would be!!! I just need to meet Him there every single minute of every single day!!!
Matthew 11:28
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Thankfully, we know that God hears our prayers and our pleas and knows the burdens of our heart...no matter how big or how small.....and His promises will never fail us ( me! }

                        Isaiah 55:11

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

What we are doing right now is praying for a miracle...praying that Holly and Brad will eventually be able to move back home. We feel it is the right thing to do as they desire that probably more than we do. So...we are committed to praying that, knowing that the above verse is true and that we can take God at His word. However, we also know that God may want them to stay gone and I promise we have a peace in our hearts about that as well. At that point I believe 100% that God will have changed the desires of all of our hearts!  We would welcome any of your prayers as well knowing that it never hurts to have as many people praying as you can!!
                                 Matthew 18:20
"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst."

Yes....you CAN have Pot Roast, Miller!!!

Ha ha!!! if only he was truly begging for it!!! It's always fun to make a pot roast, mashed potatoes, etc...and blame it on my boys!!! When in reality..I'm the one who is really craving it!!!! Don't ask me why...but when school starts back up I get the urge to cook "boy food"!!! Pot Roast, Meatloaf, you name it! It all sounds so good to me....which is exactly WHY  I made that Pot Roast, mashed potatoes, green beans, biscuits and even....FRIED OKRA!!
so...if you are craving anything like this...I hope you will give it a try!! It was so easy! And...you get to come home to the wonderful smell of dinner almost ready after a long day!!!

       Pot Roast
start with a 3 to 3 1/2lb.  English cut roast-sprinkle with lemon pepper
trim fat...not all, but a good bit of it
place in Slow Cooker....
add 1 bag of rinsed baby carrots

mix together in a bowl: 1 envelope Lipton Onion Soup mix
1 Can Golden Mushroom soup
1 soup can water
pour mixture over roast and cover tightly with lid.
Cook on low 8-9 hours until desired tenderness.
Remove to platter and keep warm;
in a small bowl mix 1 T cornstarch and a big spoonful of liquid from the roast...wisk till smooth and add to slow cooker. Turn heat to high and cook 10 minutes or so until slightly thickened for the gravy.

Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes

Mashed Potatoes: 5-6 red potatoes, peeled and scrubbed and rinsed well. Cut into cubes and cook until tender with water or chicken broth. Drain well....place in pan with 1/2 stick light butter...mash with potato masher and add desired amount of salt. Add 3/4 C or more warmed buttermilk and continue mashing....keep warm in oven or on stovetop...when ready to serve...ladle gravy from pot roast over them. Divine!!!!!

Fried Okra!! ( Yes people!!!! there are some us who really do still fry okra!!!..just ask Sharon!! )

this is a tried and true recipe....sometimes I add a "little this and that" but when I need to give this recipe to a child...this is how I do it!!!
15 pieces medium sized okra...wash it...pat dry...cut off top and then cut into desired size to fry
place in shallow bowl and cover with buttermilk ( I use non fat in everything) not that it matters here, but I figure every little bit helps!!!!
let soak for about an hour
in another shallow bowl mix 1 C self rising flour, 1/2 C white cornmeal and 1/2 C yellow cornmeal and    one t kosher salt and a generous supply of pepper!!!
In a medium sized frying pan....I have a Scan Pan from Viking and it is worth it's weight in gold!!!!
add Canola Oil to about 1/2-1" in depth and heat on medium high till almost sizzling
dredge the soaked okra...that you've somewhat drained!!! in the flour mixture and add to hot oil and fry in batches until golden brown...drain on paper towels....sprinkle with a little salt to taste

i'm guessing that the fact that we had fresh green beans from my garden doesn't really matter after all of this!!!!
I do hope you will try it! and at least pretend it's for the men in your family or a special occasion such as the first day of senior year in high school!!!!
I will cook until my face turns blue as long as my boys will eat...because that makes THEM happy which in turn makes ME happy!!! and we all know the saying....
"If Mama aint happy....NOBODY'S happy!!!!"
Happy Cooking!!!

Love is difficult to define....

but it most definitely can be described by the behavior it produces!

WOW!! That was a humbling statement in my devotional today!!! especially when it went on to describe every aspect of my deceitful heart!! I wonder...just how DID this author know me so well?? or..is it possible that alot of us are like this? I certainly hope so for my sake!! Otherwise...I am on my own dessert island!!! with no life raft...no paddle...no way out!!!!
Thankfully, we know that isn't true as long as we have Christ in our lives...and we know for a fact that He lives in our hearts and is completely capable of overriding the sin issues we face...the sin that we've encountered and the doubts that sometimes creep ever so silently into our souls.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8a  says "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

in fact....I think I will just show you exactly how John MacArthur put it!! it sure helped me!!!!

"Paul painted a portrait of the kind of love Jesus wants to produce in every believer. It is, in fact, a portrait of Christ Himself, who is love's highest expression. Unlike most English translations, which include several adjectives, the Greek forms of all those properties are verbs. They do not focus on what love is so much as on what love does and does not do.
Set against the backdrop of the Corinthians' self- promoting behavior, Paul's words are a strong rebuke. He says in effect, "Love is patient, but you are impatient. Love is kind, but you are unkind toward those who disagree with you. Love is not jealous, but you envy those with certain spiritual gifts. Love does not brag, but you are proud of your theology. Love is not arrogant and does not act unbecomingly, but often you are rude and ill-mannered toward one another.
"Love does not seek its own, but you are self-centered. Love is not provoked, but you quarrel among yourselves. Love does not take into account a wrong suffered, but you hold grudges against each other. Love does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but you delight in one another's failures. Love rejoices with the truth, but you distort and disobey God's Word.
"Love bears all things, but you are defensive and resentful. Love is eager to believe the best about someone, but you are quick to assume the worst. Love never gives up and can tolerate incredible opposition, but you are weak and intolerant."
Paul wanted the Corinthians to see the deficiencies in their love in light of the truth and make the needed corrections. You and I must do the same. So as we explore each of love's characteristics, ask the Holy Spirit to purify your heart so others will clearly see Paul's portrait of love on display in you."

oh wow....did this ever paint a picture of me in every day life!!! A bit humbling, I will certainly admit! but my heart was glad to see it...in writing..somehow that helps me realize just what I need to change and where I need to change!!! pretty much...it always ends up being a heart issue!!! if I would keep my heart with ALL diligence...I would be in alot better shape! I'm ever so grateful for the reminders that point me back to Him....if not for Him...it wouldn't just be a heart issue...it would be a life or death issue. And that my friends....is what it's all about!!!

Proverbs 4:23...
Keep thy heart with all diligence...for out of it are the issues of life.

This is Life!

So....today my husband and youngest child set off for New Orleans...I'm so glad they are getting to do this! They are going to the first pre-season game for the Saint's as well as see our daughter Holly, and her husband Brad...thanks to a very generous customer and friend.  This will probably be Miller's last trip there for awhile now that school is about to start. His first trip was spent trecking through 1000 degree heat and enduring the Essence festival that brought unbelievable crowds to an already crowded city! It was also the first time Holly and Brad had experienced New Orleans as their new home...and it was rough...I don't mind telling you!!! ( just in case I haven't already told you!!! LOL!!) anyway...moving right along...this morning was a bit rough as well! Not that it was  Miller's fault- but he  was out late because he finally decided to do something with friends even though we have begged him all summer to do something!! of course, the night before an early flight was the night that the "Most Fun Party" of the summer was to take place and so we were up pretty late and all woke up in moods that weren't really our best! On top of that...Jim had not taken a form to the High School that needed to be taken to finish Miller's application to Auburn...the dog got sprayed by a skunk...or it sure smelled that way...etc....Oh what a fun morning this was!!!!

..when i took the info to Briarwood High School it struck me that this was my "first" of many "lasts"!! My first and  last time to take money for a transcript to be sent off to college....the first and last time the office lady didn't have a clue as to who I was!!!! the first and last time I will not have a child playing football for Briarwood as Miller has decided to devote himself to basketball...the first time I haven't attended the scrimmage game which is being played right now!!! The first time no one even cared that I was a student at this school!!! I just wanted to walk in that office and see familiar faces...Dr. Kynerd, especially!!  oh....and then that got me to thinking about all of the times my own mother had driven to that High School for ME!!!! WOW!!!! What a fun day I've had-going down memory lane!!! I guess I'm realizing finally just how old I am...and I don't mean that in a bad way..believe it or not...it's just a fact!!! IN FACT.... at this very moment...my precious mother is texting me pictures of her in her beautiful new mercedes!! She and my dad are having a blast...and that let's me know that there is light at the end of this sometimes dark tunnel!!!
but...what really struck me when I took those stupid papers to the high school....was that they were not stupid at all...and all of these first and last things I'm so obsessed with lately...are what got me where I am today!!!
I need to be thankful for these "first" times and these "last" times all in one!!! If it hadn't been for the first time I ever attended Camp Briarwood...I wouldn't be a Christian! If I hadn't ever met Jim Bradford that "first" time at Briarwood Christian School...we wouldn't be married for 28 years this friday!!!! If all of my children hadn't gone through Briarwood Church and School..I cannot say where they would be today! I would hope and pray that we could've been the influence they needed to point them towards Christ...but I also know how very important everything they've ever learned through Bible at school...bible studies at church and small groups, etc...has helped to develop them into the people they are today!!!!
So...I guess the point of this blog post is to once again pay tribute where tribute is due!!! And that isn't just to Briarwood Church or School...or any other place....it's to realize that there are alot of "firsts" and "lasts" in our lives...and that's what develops our character and defines who we are. It's how we deal with those "firsts" and "lasts" that determines who we are....as well as how we relate to others. In fact...this picture is proof of a first...a first time for them to go to a Saint's game at least!

just as Romans 5:1-5 says, "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us."

The Sanctuary of the Lord

PSALM 73:16.....
16 When I pondered to understand this It was troublesome in my sight
17 Until I came into the sanctuary of God;
Then I perceived their end

Source: google.com via Carolyn on Pinterest

there are no great words of wisdom here...no insights that you and I don't already know....the only thing I could think of this morning as Jim and I sat and listened to Harry's sermon on the radio and tried to justify staying home and relaxing just one more Sunday before school started....was that I had to be in the sanctuary of the Lord!! I've never, ever, ever felt that before....not like today! We sat in our sunroom and thought we were having the most relaxing Sunday ever as Jim cleaned windows, we let Miller sleep late because he had been at the Gilbert's lake house and I blogged and listened to the sermon...which I will say..I always do because I can't hear well and it truly helps me once we are in church!!! Gosh I sound old!! but I can't help the way God made my ears!!! I love being able to nudge Jim when a really good point is about to be made or a funny joke is about to be told etc...but what I really love is that it helps ME understand the sermon! I guess I'm also a slow learner!! Nonetheless...I always listen to the early service while getting ready...and then I'm "ready" for the sermon at the late service...moving along....today was quite different...
I almost felt rebellious if I must say!!! I'm not quite sure why except that I feel as if I've been hiding away for a few months now...I've been  getting away with it because of how busy everyone is over the summer, etc...and everyone thinks I'm so busy at my shop! When in reality...Ellen Hill has changed my life and I am FOREVER grateful! She is truly a God send and I will never take it, or her for granted!!! When God chose to take Holly and Brad out of Alabama and put them into the pit of ....well...move them to Kenner, Louisiana.....right next to New Orleans....God showed His favor on me and gave me Ellen!!! I'm trying ever so hard to not put too much on her!!! So far I haven't asked her to baby sit or anything like that but she sure does fill a need where there was a huge need and she took over a role that I needed her to take over!! In fact ....she filled a need that I didn't even see coming! I had everything planned out just so... until God moved Holly and Brad away from me and I lost my the person that i thought was goint to be  my "right hand girl"!!  And that's fine!!!  Especially since Ellen and Holly were already good friends and I didn't even know it!!! It makes it so much easier because it's as if I've known her my whole life!! But I've got to quit hiding...I've got to quit pretending...and I've got to start letting God love me again!!
This morning...after I quickly realized what was happening...and I told Jim to go get Miller up...at 10:30 mind you!!! and I still had no make up on or hair done or breakfast made for Miller...all I could think of was the fact that I needed to be in the Sanctuary of the Lord!!! I threw on a dress...put on make up....but the hair!!!! it wouldn't do...so I told them to go on and I would come late!!! ( Oh...and yes I did make Miller some breakfast!! ) ...by 11:10 I was still doubting as I pulled in the parking lot alone...part of me just wanted to sit on the steps of the church...staring at the cars in the parking lot and praying for the people in MY church!!! and yet I truly, truly, truly wanted to just "feel" the arms of His sanctuary around me!!! I can honestly say I loved being the only one in the parking lot walking up to a full church!!! I wanted to dance and sing and praise God right out front and then I thought of the hidden cameras that are probably all around and the duty deacons, etc...so I didn't!! But i sure wanted too!!!!
I realize I've probably left you wondering why in the world I've even written this!!! And that's probably a good thing!! But....when I heard Chris Fabry's show on WLJR tonight...and I heard his callers calling in to talk about grief and verses that meant alot to them it struck me that in my own since of the word...I've been dealing with alot of grief! alot of real disappointment...alot of heartache...just alot of things not working out the way i wanted them to!!! and I can only imagine that alot of you have been dealing with these things as well!!
I do feel God's love all of the time! I am so blessed for that! I have never doubted His goodness or that He is working out His perfect will in our lives...I'm just disappointed alot of the time that it wasn't my simple little plan to make life work out! But guess what?? If my plan had been worked out everytime...my children would probably never be the close married couples that they are...they wouldn't be depending on each other and looking to God to meet their needs...they would be looking to me and Jim!!! and that, my friends....puts it ALL in perspective!!! We would be such a disappointment to them!!! But God NEVER is!!! and they know that!!! and I am forever blessed that they are all trusting in Him to lead them where He would have them go!!!!
Which leads me back to Psalm 73:16!!! When I did ponder all of this...it was very troublesome to me!!! That's when I felt God's nudging....just go rest in My Sanctuary today...and that's just what I did and I loved every minute of it!!! I even got to watch the kids that had been at Impact Weekend and pray for them....and THAT my friends...is whole "nother" blog post on God's Faithfulness!!!!
Thank You, Lord...for who You are ...and for Your sovereignty in all of our endeavors.....

Creole Chicken Cakes with Remoulade Sauce

But...this recipe is a keeper!!!! Please try it! and please take note that the green beans and the heirloom Old German tomatoes are HOME GROWN!!! that pesky little rabbit and I have been at war for several months now...I think he has so many relatives that I cannot keep up with the likes of him!!!
We have enjoyed our Old Germans and our Cherokee Purple tomatoes and especially our Kentucky Wonder pole beans...he doesn't seem to like those!!
However...he loves my squash and for that....he's about to be....well..."squashed"!!!
Seriously, though...here is the recipe for Cajun Chicken Cakes with Remoulade Sauce!!

2 T butter
1/2 of a medium sized red or green bell pepper
1/4 C chopped onion
1 garlic clove
3 C chopped cooked chicken
1 C soft bread crumbs
1 large egg, lightly beaten
2-3 T mayonnaisse
1-2 T Creole mustard
2-3 t Creole seasoning
1/4 C Canola oil

Remoulade Sauce:
1 C mayonnaise
3 green onions
2 T Creole mustard
2 garlic cloves or dash of garlic powder
1/4 t red pepper

To cook:

melt butter in a medium skillet and saute onion, bell pepper and garlic until softened. Stir together bell pepper mixture with remaining ingredients. Shape into desired size patties and refrigerate for several hours.
For sauce, just combine all ingredients and refrigerate as well for flavors to blend.
When ready to cook.....heat Canola oil in skillet, brown chicken cakes on both sides, turning once or twice...drain on paper towels. Serve with Remoulade Sauce and enjoy!!!

We served it with mashed potatoes and green beans and of course, our homegrown tomatoes!!! It was so yummy!!!

Here is that "pesky" rabbit!! as cute as they are...
they are ALOT of trouble when you are trying to grow a garden!!!!

As for the "Cajun" theme...if you know me, then you know we recently moved our daughter and son in law to Kenner, Louisiana...
We spent the weekend trying to "protect" Miller and his "innocent" eyes from all of the festivities! LOL!!

We even took our kids to experience Commander's Palace the first night there...I know it looks like fun...but sweet Brad was truly exhausted..I couldn't believe he actually got to meet us for just a little while!!
and then our last night we just wandered into a restaurant that looked good...noone really cared...the mood was kind of somber but not too bad!!!! I'm only saying this so that you will know why Cajun and Creole anything are SOOO important to me!! It's a way to connect with my precious daughter and son in law...it's what we have to do right now! Holly and I have decided that we are going to enjoy all of New Orleans and all that is has to offer even if it kills us!!

We are headed there in 2 weeks to celebrate our 28th Anniversary!! I've made her promise not to go to Gallatoires until we get there! That's where I want to go...and then I just want to enjoy them and help them...I hope to have many, many "Happy Anniversary" pics as well as just happy pics to post after that!!! And...you never know just what new and wonderful Cajun recipes we will be trying!!! Maybe I can share those as well!!

even the sparrow

Source: divany.hu via Gabriella on Pinterest

I love being able to rest in the fact that God watches out for the sparrow...so surely, He watches over me!

Matthew 10:29
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
